Ice Storm 07

I am in the middle of the worst ice storm in the history of Oklahoma. I have been out of power for 2 days and maybe many more. More to come as always.

Jerry Garcia Band - Live At Shoreline 9/1/90

On September 1, 1990, the Jerry Garcia Band played a particularly poignant kind of show. A Grateful Dead show was originally scheduled for that date, but the Dead's keyboard player, Brent Mydland, had recently died. Rather than cancel the gig, the Jerry Garcia Band stepped in to deliver one of their most heartfelt performances.

HOW SWEET IT IS TO BE LOVED BY YOU
STOP THAT TRAIN
DEAR PRUDENCE
I SHALL BE RELEASED

Wes Montogmery - Plays The Blues

Wes Montgomery's approach to the guitar brought new shades to America's bedrock music: the blues. Montgomery (b. 1925 - d. 1968) eschewed the customary pick in favor of his remarkable right thumb, with which he played the signature octaves that gave his blues an earthtonal quality. It was a vastly appealing sound that, through a series of commercially-geared recordings (plus some flat-out club date smoking with Wynton Kelly's trio or jamming with the perenially poll-winning organist Jimmy Smith) won Montgomery a larger following.

Sources For Madlib's Shades Of Blue - Untinted

This is a great introduction to jazz for those who may be brought into the form from Madlib's Shades of Blue. This is the exciting corner of jazz during the mid-late-60s, by some big names if not necessarily the BIG names that even non-jazz fans know. All of these tracks are great selections for this compilation, but Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Brew" stood out most to me. Maybe that's because I hadn't heard it before AND it is a great performance. The Andrew Hill tune, "Illusion", is also a standout. I could list every track as a standout, and Madlib did a good job on the sequencing because every song flows after the next in a sensible manner.

If you are new to jazz, this is a great listen for you to get a sampling of great music from different artists. If you are a sometimes listener, this will probably convince you to buy more albums by the artists included. If you're a long time fan, you may still want this for the couple of songs you don't have, or to have the collection on one disc. It's that good.

1. Shades Of Slim - Gene Harris & The 3 Sounds
2. Distant Land - Donald Byrd
3. Mystic Brew - Ronnie Foster
4. Stormy - Reuben Wilson
5. Please Set Me At Ease - Bobbie Humphrey
6. Stepping Into Tomorrow - Donald Byrd
7. Illusion - Andrew Hill
8. Montara - Bobby Hutcherson
9. Song For My Father - Horace Silver
10. Footprints - Wayne Shorter

Bonobo - Dial M For Monkey

Simon Green aka Bonobo is back with nine perfectly formed tracks on a perfectly formed album. No huge, bloated, over-conceptualised rottage for the monkey man. He gets in, does what he has to do, gets out.

From the opener, "Noctuary," with it’s creepy stoned-Hammer feel, through the headnod sitar-funk of "Flutter," on into the Rhodes-meets-Gamelan of "D Song," the first third of the record sets out the tone for what is to follow – all beautfiully melodic and perfectly assembled but with enough of a creeping undertow to stop the music becoming empty or saccharine. "Change Down" is all double bass folk and cut-up drums, "Wayward Bob" is a devilish waltz, while single "Pick Up" is a straight funk ‘n’ flute throw down. "Something For Windy"sounds like a dub of a postman on his rounds, "Nothing Owed" is epic pastoralia, while "Light Pattern" rounds things off with what sounds like the theme to the best TV programme never made.

With all instruments played, sampled and sequenced by Green’s own fair hand, there is a consistency here, both within the tunes and across the record that crate diggers can only dream of. There is real development, the building of moods and feelings, a genuine attempt to make great music which is incidentally computer music. He may make a monkey of himself, but he’s no musical mug…

  1. "Noctuary" – 5:22
  2. "Flutter" – 4:44
  3. "D Song" – 5:19
  4. "Change Down" – 4:33
  5. "Wayward Bob" – 4:39
  6. "Pick Up" – 4:08
  7. "Something for Windy" – 1:11
  8. "Nothing Owed" – 6:16
  9. "Light Pattern" – 5:12

Thievery Corporation - The Outernational Sound

This is hands down my favorite Thievery album. Why you might ask, well its the quadruple powerhouse of Lagos Communique>Sea Groove>Cookin'(version)>Cramp Your Style. It simply doesn't get better than that. Mixing fluidly between afro-beat, reggae, rock, Brazilian, soul, easy listening, electronic and rare library music, Thievery Corporation create a set that takes the listener on a trip of truly global proportions. The Outernational Sound is a seamless recording from many nights of sonic exploration with the turntables and a crate of records. From warehouse parties in Caracas to elegant soires in Honolulu, and root downs in Kingston, Garza and Hilton have played a lot of rare wax for a broad spectrum of listeners. Now, in a one-hour mix CD, the sound system has been mashed up and the whole world can share in Thievery Corporation's Outernational Sound.

Black Star - Black Star

I highly recommend that hip-hop heads add this lp to their collection, because it is one of the better albums released in the last five years. A far cry from the "money, cash, ho's" aesthetic that continues to dominate the scene, Mos Def and Talib Kwieli bring substance and emotions to their lyrics that define "keepin' it real."

While the album does have a sense of humor ("Children's Story"),it never strays too far from its message of self-awareness and perseverance. The standout tracks are "Redefinition," "K.O.S.," "Brown Skin Lady," and the off-the-chain collaboration with Common, "Respiration." Black Star confirms that there is indeed hope for hip-hop.

We weren't certain at first whether to call this a hip hop or a reggae set, since it's made up of mighty tracks of burning reggae classics, but selected by West Coast beatmaker extraordinaire Madlib! This is what happens when you let Madlib loose in the Trojan Reggee Vaults and I am sure he was doing plenty of puffing on that day.

Yesterdays New Quintet - Yesterdays Universe

Madlib displays even more virtuosity with his fifth release under the Yesterday's New Quintet moniker. This time around, the Beat Konducta expands his own universe of aliases and jazz-player personas to include the Young Jazz Rebels, the Jazzistics, and Suntouch, among many others. The key to YESTERDAY'S UNIVERSE is spotting the tastes and styles of each alter ego. For example, Jackson Conti has a penchant for Brazilian flavors, the Yesterday's Universe All-Stars go for all-out fusion jam sessions, while Suntouch delivers spaced-out journeys a la Sun Ra. Somewhere amid the schizophrenia, Lib covers Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew" and Donald Smith's "Slave Riot" and collaborates with drummers Karriem Riggins and Mamao of the famed Brazilian group, Azymuth.

Joe McDuphrey Experience - Experience EP

This is just what the doctor ordered. After watching some Brasil in Time the other day I learned about this album and boy are you in for a treat. This album is Madlib in the style of 70's jazz fusion artist Azymuth. This is about as laid back as it gets. Tasty grooves in the Stones Throw tradition. The set's got all the best feel of recent Stones Throw instrumental work, kind of a stripped-down take on 70s funky jazz styles. Joe McDuphrey plays some monster keys on the set jamming in a mellow way over laid back bass, drums, and sample loops. Produced by Madlib, the whole thing's very much in the feel of work by Yesterday's New Quintet.

Mandrill - Composite Truth

How about some Thanksgiving funk. Composite Truth is Mandrill's most successful album, commercially as well as artistically. Although the band's sense of freewheeling experimentation had been tempered, its gradual transition to a straight-ahead funk band was made perfect with two of the biggest hits of its career: "Hang Loose" and "Fencewalk." "Hang Loose" is all over the place (in a good way), moving from a grooving funk jam to mid-tempo guitar skronk and back, all part of an impassioned call to peace. "Fencewalk" also had several transitions, with a crooning chorus and an extended middle section powered by heavy brass and a screaming guitar solo. Elsewhere, Mandrill turns in a very convincing impression of a salsa band ("Hágalo"), breaks into killer loose-groove funk ("Don't Mess With People," with a splendidly undecipherable vocal), and stumbles only with the long, rasta-fied San Francisco tribute "Polk Street Carnival," featuring a bass part that would make even a student smirk.

DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist - Brain Freeze / Product Placement

Brainfreeze was recorded by DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist as a practice session for a show in February 1999 at the Future Primitive Soundsession (San Francisco) mixing funk and soul 45's. Initially 1000 copies were made and sold at the shows, and a further 1000 copies were made and distributed to local records stores in California and sold out very quickly. A cease-and-desist letter from 7-11 Convenience stores—the whole artwork and styling was based on their logos and uniforms—meant that they stopped and moved on. The album was then bootlegged and it can now be found in popular record shops.

LTJ Bukem - Journey Inwards

Definitely, the most progressive and the most various work by Bukem. I'm a huge jazz fan, so I was glad do discover such cuts as 'Journey Inwards', 'Sunrain' and 'Inner Guidance. LTJ Bukem is undoubtedly one of the founding fathers of Drum & Bass, and it shows on his new album, "Journey Inwards". He digresses from the style we are all accustomed to, his flowing intelligent jungle sets, choosing to make a more melodic and soulful album. Every track on "Journey Inwards" has a message of sorts, and his producing abilities are evident with every track. Beats are layered on top of one another and the occasional break in the beat reminds you to come back from the jazzy world he creates. Be warned...this album is VERY chill. If you want hard, intelligent jungle, then get a progression sessions CD, because this is some true ambience.

Gotan Project - La Revancha Del Tango

Released in Europe in 2001, La Revancha Del Tango’s sexy combination of chillout programming and authentic tango music became a lounge favorite and led to massive sales. Lightning struck twice when it was released two years later in the States--the domestic debut attracted the attention of electronic music hipsters, tango freaks, and world music geeks. And rightfully so. The Gotan trio of Philippe Cohen Solal, Christoph H. Müller, and Eduardo Makaroff write the album's strongest material themselves, but their imaginative incorporation of Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge," Gato Barbieri's theme from the movie Last Tango In Paris and, not surprisingly, Astor Piazzolla's "Vuelvo Al Sur" into the Gotan world shows just how broad and inclusive their tastes really are.

Ott - Blumenkraft

This album is very hard to describe but i will give it a try. For fans of Shpongle and other psy-trace artist's, Ott bombards your face with a huge sonic spiral of sound. From Dub to Middle Eastern influence and beyond. Ott doesn't leave much to the imagination. This is some full frontal electronic music. I was amazed at how much i liked this upon first listen and it keeps on getting better with time. This album is not for the faint of heart and comes highly recommended.

Bonobo - Days To Come

Ninja Tune rarely disappoints and this album is no exception. I would classify Days To Come as breaks having sex with some jazzy lounge. If that doesn't make sense you might be too far gone. The incredible vocals of Bajka only put this album over the top.

Simon Green aka Bonobo returns with his third album and the kind of quantum leap in quality that very few artists make. “Days To Come” has the feeling of a classic all over – a big, brooding, emotional and uplifting record that you can dance to, do the dishes to, or sit and really study.

Green has always been expert at welding together music dripping with atmosphere, combining his own musical and technical talents in such a way as to make utterly organic-sounding machine music. This is not just a knob-twiddling producer but a multi-instrumentalist at work, who writes, plays and then manipulates almost every note of music he releases. And “Days To Come” shows a new structural awareness growing from this, a feeling for the song form and the gradual build which raises it way above the work of many of his contemporaries and cries out for him to achieve the kind of mainstream success that has talent has long hinted at.

St.Germain - Tourist

All I can say is do you like funky house? Well I do and let me say this album is a must hear. Very chill. This is more puff down or come down music than anything. Here is what Blue Note Europe has to say about this album.

"Ludovic Navarre, alias St. Germain, pioneer of the French Touch, the new electronic music in France, has become an indisputable and respected reference on the international music scene. His album Boulevard, released in July 95' has sold over 200,000 copies worldwide and has achieved 'classic' status from DJ's and producers alike. After taking a 5 year recording hiatus, St. Germain is back with the highly anticipated TOURIST, an intriguing collage of jazz for the DJ culture - a mixture of sampled rhythms and live musicians. Special guests include guitarist Ernest Ranglin and percussionist Idrissa Diop."

Up next is the spacey funk of the Heliocentrics. Personally I think it sounds like a mix between The Beastie Boys In sounds From Way Out and Tortoise mixed with some sick drum breaks from the likes of Madlib and YNQ. Malcom Catto's drum work is amazing and I highly recomend giving this a listen. Here is what some others said about this album. “Malcolm Catto’s band turns traditional funk on its head with his syncopated drums tying up ’60s psychedelia and free jazz into chaos-on-the-one.” – URB Magazine "

Four years in the making, The Heliocentrics' debut album is finally complete. Out There is here.

Good luck trying to categorize their music. Led by the relentless drummer Malcolm Catto, the UK collective's objective lays quite a ways beyond what ordinary listeners know or expect. In an alternative galaxy, where the orbits of Hip-Hop, Funk, Jazz, Psychedelic, Electronic, Avante-Garde and Ethnic music all revolve around “The One” – that's where you might find The Heliocentrics.

A listen to a song or two reveals no small influence from the funk universe of James Brown. But there's also the disorienting asymmetry of Sun Ra's music. The cinematic scope of Ennio Morricone. The sublime fusion of David Axelrod. But the Heliocentrics' music isn't retro. It's brand new. And it's timeless. They have well-placed fans in the likes of Madlib (Catto was featured on his Shades of Blue album and on various Yesterdays New Quintet releases) and DJ Shadow (the band backed him on the song “This Time I’m Gonna Do It My Way” from his The Outsider album), who will tell you that this band is really the next shit but that they have the consistency and musicianship that seems to have been lost somewhere in the analog to digital shuffle over the past thirty years.

ESL.Remixed

This is my new blog that I am making to share some music with you guys.
I hope you enjoy it. I have an eclectic music collection and hope to update frequently.

First up is ESL.Remixed
This is a wonderful album by the boys from the Thievery Corporation. I have really been diggin' this album and hope yo do too. Here is a little write up from the peeps at ESL.

A decade after dropping its first single, Thievery Corporation's classic "2001 Spliff Odyssey," ESL Music has reached its 100th release! To celebrate this rare milestone Thievery Corporation and their label mates have invited some of the world's finest musicians, DJs, and producers to remix, reinterpret, and rewind gems old and new from the ESL Music catalogue. What better way to honor the catalogue than through the eyes and ears of friends and international music luminaries like Medeski, Martin & Wood, Beatfanatic, Calexico, Boca 45, Quantic, Fort Knox Five, Shawn Lee and more. This is no static retrospective; this is the next stage in the ever intriguing ESL musical journey.
